Uma Ramanan, an Indian playback singer who rose to stardom by singing in Tamil, is no longer with us. The singer passed away in Chennai on May 1st. She was a frequent collaborator with music composer Ilaiyaraaja.

Vignesh Ramanan, the singer’s son, and singer-husband AV Ramanan both survive her. Uma met Ramanan after receiving classical music instruction from Pazhani Vijayalakshmi. Ramanan was looking for vocalists to perform with in his live concerts at the time. They quickly started working together professionally, which eventually developed into love.

Musical legacy of three decades

Uma was a talented classical singer who sang in over 6,000 shows throughout the duration of her more than thirty-year career. Her career in music started with the 1977 film Sri Krishna Leela, for which SV Venkatraman wrote the song Mohanan Kannan Murali.

She became well-known in the Tamil cinema industry because of the song Poongathave Chocha Thakavai from the musical Nizhalgal, which was written by Ilaiyaraaja. She sang a number of songs for her partner, but her extended relationship with Ilaiyaraaja is what made her famous. She collaborated with Ilaiyaraaja on more than 100 tracks.

Aanandha Raagam from Panneer Pushpangal, Bhoopalam Isaikkum from Thooral Ninnu Pochchu, Kanmani Nee Vara from Thendrale Ennai Thodu, Ponn Maanae from Oru Kaidhiyin Dairy, Aagaya Vennilave from Arangetra Velai, and Sri Ranga Ranganathanin from Mahanadi are a few of her well-known songs for Ilaiyaraaja.

She worked with composers such as MSV, Shankar-Ganesh, T Rajender, Deva, SA Rajkumar, Chili, Mani Sharma, Srikanth Deva, and Vidyasagar in addition to Ilaiyaraaja. In addition, Uma and AV Ramanan performed a song for the Hindi movie Playboy. Kannum Kannumthan Kalandaachu for Vijay’s Thirupaachi was Uma Ramanan’s last song.
