Director Sundar C, who has previously directed films in the Aranmanai genre, is returning with the fourth entry. Even while some people might not have liked his earlier Aranmanai movies, fans just can’t get enough of them, as seen by the popularity of Aranmanai 3, which was released in 2021 and ended up being one of the year’s most financially successful films.

Aranmanai 4 employs a similar formula, mixing horror-comedy with kid-friendly moments to appeal to a family audience. Since it’s a summer release, Aranmanai 3 could be enough to attract the interest of the family audience.

The Premise

Aranmanai 4 is a scary film set in a woodland house, with supernatural forces, spirits, comedy characters, children, a godman, and poojas. The plot centers on Selvi (Tamannaah Bhatia) and her husband (Santhosh Prathap), who live peacefully with their two children. However, Selvi’s husband attempts to murder her and the children, and the police notify her brother, lawyer Saravanan (Sundar C), who investigates the crime. The film includes a song in appreciation of the gods, as well as Sundar C’s intervention.

Saravanan and the police investigate a tragic incident involving mysterious murders and a ghost in their home. Maestry and Carpenter assist Selvi’s partner, while Dr. Maya’s grandpa resides there. The goal is to sell the home and use the proceeds to establish a hospital and offer social services, which will include Dr. Maya’s grandpa.

Saravanan explores the ghost that haunts Selvi’s house and meets a godman who knows more about it. He discloses another terrible entity and how to avoid death. Saravanan defends his family and reveals the truth about Selvi and her husband’s terrible background.

The Performances

Director Sundar C has extended the franchise’s cast to include KS Ravikumar, Rajendran, Singampuli, Vichu Vishwanath, and V Jayaprakash. The film has four comedians and Raashi Khanna in a glamorous role. Tamannaah Bhatia and Raashi Khanna are excellent in their performances, but Khushbu and Simran’s special appearance in the second half is a delightful surprise that adds interest to the picture. Many of the performers have played similar characters in previous films.

Final Thoughts

The audience for Sundar C’s Aranmanai series is one that doesn’t care too much about logic; it’s one that enjoys jump scares, humorous dialogue, cast antics, fight scenes, religious themes, upbeat music, and a satisfying conclusion that sees the evil defeated and everyone returns to their happy family. Since this is also the central theme in Aranmanai 4, the director appears to have mastered the idea after four editions. If you walk into Aranmanai 4 with no expectations, you won’t leave the movie utterly delighted, but you also won’t leave feeling let down.
