Shaw-Warner upholds their stellar reputation
David Warner and Prithvi Shaw, known for their destructive opening combinations in the IPL, returned to the field after being left out for the opening two games. Despite their initial struggles, the duo found rhythm and took down CSK bowlers, including Deepak Chahar and Mustafizur Rahman. They continued their attack, especially against Ravindra Jadeja, securing 24 runs in his first two overs. Warner even reached his 62nd IPL half-century in the ninth over, putting DC on 91 for no loss. Their performance was a highlight of the season for both sides.
Pathirana reverses the situation
CSK’s Matheesha Pathirana’s impressive first over bowled a significant impact on DC, despite facing wides in Prithvi Shaw’s arc. Pathirana’s one-handed diving catch at short third dismissed Warner, making him the first wicketkeeper to bag 300 catches in T20s. Tushar Deshpande and Chahar bowled tight overs, and by the end of Pathirana’s second over, DC were reduced to 134 for 4.
Pant countermeasures
Pant struggled to connect on the ball until the 17th over, but he found his old mojo again, hitting a six and two boundaries off successive deliveries. In the next over, he carried on his attack against Pathirana, taking the bowler apart for two boundaries and a six. Pant’s late attack helped him register his first fifty on return to IPL and take DC to a commanding 191 for 5.
CSK reversed course early
Delhi Capitals secured two early wickets with swing bowling by Khaleel Ahmed, thanks to helpful conditions. Ruturaj Gaikwad and Rachin Ravindra contributed to the win, with Ahmed conceding only nine runs in his three-over spell, limiting CSK to 32 for 2.
CSK responds, but DC maintains control
Daryl Mitchell and Ajinkya Rahane helped CSK recover from a difficult situation with a 68-run partnership in 45 balls. They struggled to get started due to the rising rate, but Mitchel’s stay ended with an unexpected loft off Axar Patel. Rahane and Shivam Dube attempted to continue CSK’s recovery, but DC maintained control. Mukesh Kumar dismissed Rahane and Rizvi in the 14th over.
Jadeja and Dhoni try a late battle, but it is unsuccessful
Mukesh bowled a crucial over, allowing Dhoni to bat with 72 required off 23 balls. Dhoni and Jadeja’s flurry of boundaries in the final two overs reduced the equation to 46. Mukesh’s decisive over, which gave only five runs in the penultimate over, destroyed CSK’s chances. Anrich Nortje’s forgettable final over, which yielded two sixes and two boundaries, also contributed to the defeat. Despite Dhoni’s late surge, CSK finished 20 runs short of DC’s total.
