Today is the birthday of Satyajit Ray, India’s selfless director. Satyajit Ray is one of the best Indian film directors of all time. Satyajit Ray is a screenwriter, documentary director, songwriter, magazine editor, cartoonist, and musician. He directed 36 films, including The Apu Trilogy, Music Room (1958), Big City (1963), and Charulata (1964). He has been awarded 36 national awards over his career, including Italy’s top Golden Lion award, Germany’s famous Golden Bear award, two Silver Bears, and an Oscar honorary medal. Who is the Satyajit Ray?
The Ray surname was used to identify Satyajit Ray’s family. Born and raised in Bengal, his family is devotees of Lord Vishnu. In modern-day Kolkata, Satyajit Ray was born on May 2nd, 1922, to Suprabha Ray, a West Bengali native, and young writer Sukumar Ray. When he was just 2 years old, his father Satyajit Ray passed away. Later on, he developed an interest in having his writings published in the kids’ magazine “Sandesh,” which was edited by his grandpa, Upendra Kishore Ray.
After completing his studies at Presidency College, Satyajit Ray went on to get his BA in Economics from Government High School, Ballygange, Kolkata. After that, his mother convinced him to enroll at Santiniketan College, which was established by poet Rabindranath Tagore, to study painting fine arts.
In 1943, he went on to work as a graphic designer for a British advertising business, where he created numerous publications. Having been a world cinema enthusiast since his early years, Satyajit Ray founded the Calcutta Film Society in 1947 and presented several international films. He read it after seeing it. He got married to Bijoya Das, the long-term love of his life, in 1949.
Debut, Career & Achievements
The 1928 film “Bader Panjali” by Satyajit Ray was adapted from the Bengali classic novel “Bildungsroman.” He began by creating storyboards for the movie. The life of Abu, a country youngster, serves as the basis for the movie. Following that, in 1956, he created 29 pieces for Aparajito, Parsh Badar (Philosopher’s Stone), Jalsagar (Music Room), Apur Sansar (Arabic World), Devi, Deen Kanya (Three Women), Kanjanjunga, Nayak, Abhijan (Journey), Mahanagar, and Charulata. Shatruj’s Kilari (The Chess Player), Joy Baba (The Elephant God), Satkati (Liberation), Shaka Proshaka (Tree Branches), and Akanduk (The Stranger) Are among the feature films, five documentaries, and two short films that he has written and directed.
Ashani Sanket, his directing debut, drew criticism for drawing up India’s poverty to the outside world. The Satyajit Ray-directed “Abu Trilogy” was one of the 100 “All-Time” films of 2005 featured in Times magazine. Satyajit Ray is a writer of novels and short stories in addition to being a director. The painter has written screenplays for independent films. He was a composer as well.
Ray received the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1984.
In 1992, the 64th Academy Awards were presented. Then, for his efforts, Satyajit Ray received an honorary Oscar.
