Mayank Yadav, the 21-year-old fast bowler, made an immediate impact on his IPL debut, winning player of the match after an impressive spell that helped Lucknow Super Giants turn things around against Punjab Kings. In the process, he drew attention by consistently clocking over 150 kmph and ultimately delivering the fastest ball of the tournament so far at 155.8 kmph.

  • Mayank, who plays for Delhi in the domestic circuit, was spotted by former India cricketer Vijay Dahiya during a Vijay Hazare Trophy match. Given that this took place just before the mega auction for the 2022 season, the youngster was signed by the new franchise, which had Dahiya as an assistant coach at the time.
  • Mayank, on the other hand, did not play in any games during LSG’s inaugural season, in which the team finished third. Mohsin Khan’s injury last year could have provided an opportunity for Mayank, but he too was sidelined with a ripped hamstring that kept him out for the entire season.
  • Recent white-ball cricket performances by Delhi and the North Zone drew attention. He took 5 wickets in four games of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and was Delhi’s best bowler even in the semifinals, which they eventually lost. In the Vijay Hazare Trophy, he took six wickets in five games.
  • Before those tournaments, he was among the top performers in the 2023 Deodhar Trophy. Mayank was selected for the North Zone squad and troubled batters with his serious pace, taking 12 wickets in 5 games at an average of 17.58.
  • Mayank has only appeared in one first-class match in his short career. In December 2022, he made his Ranji Trophy debut against Maharashtra. He took two wickets in the game and has not played the format since.
  • At the post-match press conference, Mayank revealed that he used to admire South African legend Dale Steyn. Steyn was one of many former cricketers who praised the youngster after his IPL debut.
